Privacy Policy

Effective: April 5, 2026  ·  Last updated: April 5, 2026

The short version

InsurePet.ca collects only the information you voluntarily enter into our quote comparison form. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information. We do not store sensitive personal or financial data. This policy explains exactly what we collect and why.

1. About InsurePet.ca

InsurePet.ca (“InsurePet,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is an independent Canadian pet insurance comparison platform. We are not an insurance provider, broker, or agent. We do not underwrite, sell, or administer insurance products. Our service helps Canadian pet owners compare coverage options offered by third-party insurance carriers.

InsurePet.ca does not currently serve residents of Quebec. This policy is governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein.

2. Our Commitment to Privacy Under PIPEDA

InsurePet.ca is committed to protecting your personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and any applicable provincial privacy legislation. PIPEDA establishes rules for how private-sector organizations collect, use, and disclose personal information in the course of commercial activities.

Our privacy practices are based on the ten fair information principles set out in PIPEDA: Accountability, Identifying Purposes, Consent, Limiting Collection, Limiting Use, Disclosure and Retention, Accuracy, Safeguards, Openness, Individual Access, and Challenging Compliance.

3. Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum information necessary to provide our comparison service. This includes:

  • Quote form inputs — pet type (dog or cat), breed, age, province or territory, and any known health conditions you voluntarily disclose. This information is used solely to generate and rank carrier recommendations.
  • Usage data — standard web server logs including IP address, browser type, referring URL, pages visited, and timestamps. This data is used to operate and improve the site and is not linked to any individual user.
  • Analytics data — if you have analytics cookies enabled, aggregate and anonymised data about how visitors interact with the site (e.g. pages viewed, time on site, click patterns). We do not use analytics tools that identify individual users.

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, home address, payment information, Social Insurance Number, or any government-issued identification unless you choose to contact us directly. We do not collect health information beyond what you voluntarily enter into the quote form, and this information is not stored beyond your browsing session.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information collected for the following purposes:

  • To generate personalised carrier recommendations and estimated pricing based on your pet's profile.
  • To improve the accuracy and relevance of our comparison algorithm.
  • To operate, maintain, and improve the InsurePet.ca website.
  • To understand aggregate usage patterns and optimise user experience.
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations.

We do not use your information for direct marketing, automated profiling for purposes beyond comparison, or any purpose incompatible with those listed above.

5. Disclosure of Information

InsurePet.ca does not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose your personal information to third parties, except in the following limited circumstances:

  • Affiliate carriers — when you click a “Get Quote” button, you are redirected to the carrier's own website. InsurePet.ca may pass basic, non-identifying referral parameters (such as a session token or affiliate code) to the carrier solely for commission tracking purposes. The carrier's own privacy policy governs any information you provide on their site.
  • Service providers — we may use trusted third-party services (such as web hosting and analytics providers) that process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements. These providers are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes.
  • Legal requirements — we may disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of InsurePet.ca, its users, or the public.

6. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

InsurePet.ca uses cookies and similar technologies to operate the site. These include:

  • Essential cookies — necessary for core site functionality (e.g. maintaining your session as you navigate between pages). These cannot be disabled.
  • Analytics cookies — used to understand aggregate user behaviour. These may be blocked via your browser settings or a cookie consent tool without affecting core functionality.
  • Affiliate tracking cookies — when you click through to a carrier, a cookie may be set by that carrier's affiliate tracking system (e.g. Impact Radius, Partnerize) to attribute any resulting commission. These are third-party cookies governed by the carrier's and affiliate network's own policies.

You can manage cookie preferences through your browser settings. Disabling cookies may affect some functionality.

7. Data Retention

Quote form data entered by users is processed in real time and is not persistently stored on InsurePet.ca's servers beyond the duration of your browsing session. Standard web server logs are retained for up to 90 days for security and operational purposes and then deleted. Aggregate, anonymised analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

8. Data Security

InsurePet.ca uses industry-standard security measures to protect the site and any information processed through it, including HTTPS/TLS encryption for all data in transit. Access to server infrastructure is restricted to authorised personnel.

No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights Under PIPEDA

Subject to applicable legal limitations, you have the right to:

  • Access — request access to personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction — request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
  • Withdrawal of consent — withdraw consent to the collection or use of your personal information at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions.
  • Complaint — file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) if you believe your privacy rights have been violated: www.priv.gc.ca.

10. Children's Privacy

InsurePet.ca is not directed at individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@insurepet.ca and we will promptly delete it.
